Balancing a Blog With a Job & Your Social Life

Friday 3 April 2015

At the tender age of eighteen I'm still living the high life that every teenager should do - this includes days out with friends, nights out on the town and so much more but besides hanging out with friends and having endless nights with my Spotify playlists and Twitter I also work full time at Next whilst writing a blog - sounds fairly simple right? Not.

"Teenagers have it easy" - the elder like to say but if you work as much as me and struggle to find time to do things you love to do it can prove pretty exhausting. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love my job at Next in which I've worked there almost three years. I have the best friends and times there and I work almost non stop which I adore as pay day always proves to be very pretty.

Quitting College (my dreadful third year may I add, I did do a two year Media Course which I passed with a delightful DDM) and entering a world of full time work I knew was going to be strenuous but very rewarding. I work so much to the point I did sixteen days in a row without a break which was exhausting.

Working full time has its positives and negatives. I earn a considerable amount of money monthly but finding the time to fit around friends and blogging in my schedule is hard. Don't get me wrong, I still find time to go on a night out which I love, going out is one of my favourite things - with added alcohol and strobe lights of course but those casual day out with friends has almost become a rarity - which in a way is bitter-sweet? Why you ask?

Days out with friends are important to me, I love them and doing them so often is never a negative. I love to go out for food with friends and even take a summery day trip to Bristol in which my hard earned money goes on the things I love but at this point in time they've almost become a rarity and I feel like I'm deprived in socialising with friends. However these becoming rare means they're going to be more worthwhile and memorable when they come round.

This leads me on to my next area of discussion. Losing days out with friends means I can't find time to take style photographs for my blog. Days out with my good friend Jessie are essential as she has always been my photographer on our days out as she agrees to take my style posts for me. This explains as to why my blog lacks in style posts as we never find to meet up - sigh.

Writing a blog amongst everything is very hard don't get me wrong. People must think blogging is such a simple task but taking time to write the post and take photos can almost take up to a day to do in some cases even more.

I like to think I try my best to update my blog as frequently as I can amongst everything I do, a job and a social life. As long as I find myself posting at a minimum of once a week then I'm pleased as I know I'd of least made the effort to write a blog post.

But that's not at all, if you're in the same position as me then I'll be giving you tips as to what to do if you're struggling to update your blog.
  • I advise you to take the time to note down every blog post you want to write in forthcoming weeks therefore you have a place stored of all your blogging ideas that you can come back to.
  • I advise you to pre write any blog posts. If you have some sort of free time somewhere and are in some-what a writing/bloggery mood then write your post out and then come back to post once you're ready to share it with the world therefore when it comes to posting it can be as simple as clicking a button.
  • Take photos of almost everything in one day, if you're feeling in a creative mood then take a wide range of photos for upcoming blog posts then you're prepared to add them to posts when you have time to write them.
  • Every little helps. Do any sort of bloggery things in between breaks at work or on your bus ride to town. Anything that'll help improve your blog is fab.
I hope this little nifty tips and post help you realise you can do it all at once.

Lastly, I apologise for not posting as much as I can but I hope this style of post puts the point across that I'm very busy. But check out for more posts this month including my collaboration with 90:10.

  1. It's so important to plan with blogging! Then taking a day to take the photos is a great idea. You an always write posts here and there, but it's the taking photos that requires most of the effort, I find!

    1. You're correct, writing the post is nothing more than a half an hour job if you know what you're writing but finding the time to take photos is the worst.

  2. Great post! Though, I'm no teen no more, oh boy do I relate to this as much as I expected. Your advice is pretty accurate to my supposed "blogger plan" but I can't help it when life gets in the way. Things can get pretty exhausting physically and mentally, but the pressure only makes blogging much more enjoyable for me really.

  3. Couldn't agree more with this. I went through Uni and travelled for a year and had so much time to start a blog. Incredibly I chose to start it during full-time work instead! The hours are sacred and proper planning is a must!

    1. Thank you, and haha oh no, awkward timing for both of us but least it's going well for us two. I wanted to start a blog almost two years ago but didn't feel comfortable doing so but doing it now has been great but the whole full time work side of it has put a strain on my blogging sometimes but the money is fab.

    1. Yeah great idea, I tend to do a lot of lifestyle posts in one day but style posts seem to be a monthly thing because it's hard to find someone to take photos of yourself frequently.

      Thank you also.
